How is a deal to buy a used car completed?
Buying a car is a task. Requiring special attention to all details of the transaction. The easiest way to buy a car is at a dealership – the company’s employees will carry out the registration with minimal expenditure of time, effort and nerves of the buyer. But what to do if you have to buy a used car? Registration of a used car has many “pitfalls” that it is advisable not to stumble over.
Buying a used car: how to prepare for paperwork
Even before the official conclusion of the transaction, all important aspects of cooperation with the seller should be agreed upon. Please check and confirm:
- cost of the transaction object (car);
- terms and method of payment;
- replacement of car number and insurance policy;
- deadline for final transfer of ownership and receipt of car keys.
Whether or not to agree to make an advance payment is the buyer’s decision. You do not have to advance the purchase and pay the entire amount when signing the contract. This condition must also be agreed upon at the stage of preparation for signing the papers.
The next step in the process of preparing to buy a used car and certify documents is checking the vehicle’s history. All information necessary for verification is in the vehicle passport (Issuing paper PTS in Ukraine was discontinued in 2019). It contains information about all owners, the date of manufacture of the car, license plate and body number, VIN, and technical parameters. Use online car history checking services (there are many of them today). Using the license plate number or VIN code you will receive detailed information about the vehicle’s history. Don’t waste time – check the car before concluding a contract. If there is no paper PTS, data about the vehicle is present in the electronic database.
Check all numbers from the vehicle passport and real data. They must match. Carefully study the car service book and warranty service records.
When buying a car second hand, you no longer have to give up the license plates. You can leave them and replace them later.
Buying a used car: the correct procedure
After checking the car and agreeing on all the important points, you can begin concluding an agreement on the transfer of ownership rights. This document must contain the following information:
- record of the date and time of the agreement;
- passport details of the parties;
- car information;
- method of depositing money and terms of car transfer;
- absence of onerous circumstances.
Documents when purchasing a used car should be filled out very carefully. All lines of the form must be completed. Place dashes in empty lines. This way you will be protected from the risks of introducing extraneous information into an already signed agreement.
The process of purchasing a used car may include the conclusion of an additional vehicle acceptance agreement. It notes the very fact of transfer of the car, and also indicates the absence of claims. Thanks to the signing of the deed, the buyer will be protected from paying fines for the previous owner and other troubles.
Purchasing and registering a used car involves signing papers in three copies. One of them remains with the buyer, the second – with the seller, the third – use it to register the car. The contract does not have to be notarized – you can contact a specialist if you wish.
The purchase of a used car can be done in another way – through the execution of a general power of attorney with the transfer of all rights. In this case, the former owner transfers the car and all transport documents to the buyer, but the car itself remains the property of the seller.
Registration of a used car: further steps
Having received ownership of the car, you must go through another important stage – enter data about the new car owner into the electronic database. To do this, provide the purchase and sale agreement to the service center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, write an application for deregistration and pay for a new package of documents in your name. Register your car, pay for registration services and a new license plate. Receive documents and registration certificate. The next important issue is obtaining insurance. OSAGO is a mandatory car insurance policy in Ukraine. To purchase a policy, contact the selected insurance company and sign an agreement. You can get insurance online today. The electronic version of OSAGO has the same functions as the paper version.
Obtaining license plates, documents for the car and concluding an insurance contract will be the final steps in the procedure for purchasing a used car. After completing all stages, you become the full owner of the vehicle and can dispose of it at your own discretion.
